Yoga teacher training is the course that provides education for yoga students to deepen their practice and understandings on science of yoga. Some of the courses are offering certifications and accreditations for the students that can help them to continue or start the career of a yoga teacher. Majority of the yoga teacher training courses covers the yoga as exercise aspect, consisting mainly of the practice of yoga asanas, leading to certification. What do you learn in yoga teacher training? Altho Yoga Alliance, British Wheel of Yoga or European Union of Yoga are setting the standards for obtaining authorisation for yoga teachers and yoga teacher trainings, the syllabuses taught to trainee can vary from school to school but most of them include the components of hatha yoga, namely asanas, pranayama, and bandhas, and sometimes details of the subtle body with chakras, nadis and koshas; meditation; anatomy and physiology; psychology and philosophy of yoga; teaching methods; and the practicalities of running a yoga business. Some attention may be given to specific techniques such as Restorative Yoga and yoga nidra.
Can a beginner do yoga teacher training? There are many studios and yoga schools that are offering the teacher trainings for absolute beginners. In fact, in many teacher trainings, you’ll find women who are over 60, men who had never done yoga before, students in college, and everyone in between. Sure, for many people, investing time and money in a teacher training is mainly due to the desire to be certified to teach yoga. But for many others, the practice, lessons, and overall experiences learned throughout the training are what really convince them to do it. As long as you find a syllabus and school that sparks your curiosity and it is aligned with your values it can be a life changing experience.
How does yoga teacher training work? Most of the Yoga teacher training programs are long anywhere from 21 days to a full month. Some of the courses are offering a full immersions including accommodation and meals and some of them are offering only the course. It is very important to do a research of the school and the teachers while making decision on which course to commit. Expect to study a lot and practice yoga asanas almost every day. Keep your mind open and be ready for expanding outside of your comfort zone. Yes, some days will include some sore muscles and maybe few tears bubbling up, but that’s all part of the growing process.
