As the year 2021 comes to an end we can all agree that it was a really a challenging one. Probably, for most of us between pandemic, earthquakes, hurricanes, fires, unemployment and homeschooling our nerves are frayed and our zest for a life overhaul is a bit depleted.
It has been a tradition for many of us to set the intentions for the New Year high, and let’s be honest, most of these resolutions were never coming to life because the bar is just too high. Something like: “This year I’ll become thin” or “This year I’ll get married” or “ I will make more money” especially during these days can put an extra load on our already overloaded nervous system, leaving us feeling overwhelmed.
So how about setting our resolutions this year in a more gentle way. To choose a goal that is smaller and more reachable. Something that will support us in finding our balance and to be good to ourselves. Something small and attainable.
Here is how to get started.
Contemplate on your motivation for this coming year:
Spend a few moments on actually making it clear with yourself what is your motivation behind changing a habit. Just because is 1st of January it doesn’t mean our motivation will be high up.
Think about what changes would you like to make but more important why you would like to make them. What makes you committed to reaching your goal?
Pick smaller, more achievable goals
Be precise with your goal. “I want to get fit” for example it’s a pretty vague goal.
Try with something like: I will take a walk 2 times per week, I’ll take a Hatha yoga or Kundalini yoga class 1 time per week, I’ll meditate 5 minutes before I go to sleep, I’ll have 20 quiet minutes with myself 3 times per week… You can set up the shorter time frame, like 1 or 2 months and if you keep doing it consistently you can increase it. Smaller success can make you more motivated and propel you to reach a bigger goals. Or maybe this is the year it feels in alignment to take a yoga teacher training to become a yoga instructor, or perhaps an online yoga 200 hour certification will be more accessible for you to complete a YTT!
Make a plan
Now that you have a goal, what you need to do to actually achieve it?
There are many studies that are showing us a fact that a good plan is important in reaching your goals.
So write down your goals, shorten your list to a one or two that is most attractive to you and schedule it in your daily/ weekly schedule. Make a space for that date with yourself and treat it like a date with the most important person in the Universe.
Give yourself some slack
The Year 2020 was a rough ride so don’t put too much pressure on yourself. The most important and something worth celebrating is, the fact that you are trying, you are making an effort.
Remember, every time we get distracted or carried away that is the great moment where we can realize that we were lost and start all over again, thousands and thousands of times. We have always a chance to start again.
